Research themes

Victor Gonzalez's research bears on the synthesis processes and reactivity of ancient paint materials. He works on the relationships between the structures and optical properties of pigments, and on the chemical reactivity of historical paint layers, which are composite (inorganic pigment(s) + organic binder(s)) systems. His research at PPSM is based on a vision of paint layers as heterogeneous environments, approached from an angle that coherently integrates formulation, photochemical behaviour and reactivity. By implementing new multi-scale chemical imaging analytical probes, in particular based on luminescence or structural analysis using synchrotron radiation, he aims to connect certain chemical markers identified at nano-micrometric scales with the evolution of paints at the macroscopic scale. The objective is to establish new causal relationships between the organisation of pictorial matter at small scales and its evolution over time.

  • Post-doctoral contracts - TU Delft (2017-2018) / Rijksmuseum (2019-2021), Netherlands. Follow-up of active crystallisation mechanisms within historical paint layers, leading to the in situ formation of organometallic complexes and non-original crystalline phases
  • Marie Sklowdoska-Curie fellowship - PPSM (2021-2023). Chemical imaging of pictorial formulations used by 20th century artists: mesoscopic organisation and alteration phenomena
