This article aims at reviewing currently available techniques and systems under development for the detection of explosive traces, in order to both prevent terrorist attacks against strategic installations and facilitate humanitarian demining. Continuous monitoring of public sites requires sensors having a shorter analysis time and able to self-operate. As regards landmine detection, which respond to a different problematic, needs are related to the development of highly sensitive, low cost and robust devices.
